The “Big Cats” Flag from Korea

To commemorated the 25th Asia-Pacific Regional Scout Conference (APRSC) which been held at Gwangju, South Korea, from 3rd to 8th November 2015, I made some memorabilia items. This “Big Cats” flag is one of the memorabilia items I made. The flag depicted with the design of tiger, lion, and puma, which I cut off from the patrol flag and put it together in one flag. There is also words “APRSC 2015” on top and “Korea” on the bottom.

To make it personal, I also put a special limited edition badge on right top of the flag. This flag size is approximately 34 x 48 centimeters. Then, I brought the flag and other memorabilia items to Korea. I arrived in that beautiful country on 31st October 2015, since I must participate in some pre-conference meeting.

While the APRSC participants have an educational tour, I brought the flag inside my backpack. Then the time has come. It was a group photo session with all the participants. I take off the flag from my backpack, and raised it with my hands.

Back home in Jakarta, Indonesia, I have the opportunity to modify the flag. Here is the flag, ready to frame and become a historical APRSC memorabilia from Korea.

The Scout Pickers

For those who like to see the History channel on TV, maybe you are aware of “The American Pickers” and “The Australian Pickers” TV-show. Two friends with their van, goes along the country to looking for things that can be restore or become a memorabilia and collectible pieces.

Who knows, I just accidentally became a Scout Picker. It happened on May 30th and 31st, 2016 , when I was told there was debris of Scouts Warehouse at Scout Campsite in Cibubur , East Jakarta, Indonesia. In the ruins of the warehouse, there are a number of Scout memorabilia that have been untreated and neglected, scattered around the floor or still in the old and broken boxes.

With Andi Widjanarko, a friend from the Indonesia Scout Journalist community, we saved a number of objects that can still be saved. Without meaning to, I found myself become a Scout Picker, and with my friend Andi, we become “The Scout Pickers”.

Saving the WOSM Flag

On the last days of May 2016, Andi Widjanarko, a friend of Indonesia Scout Journalist (ISJ) community tells me that when he visited Cibubur Scout Camp at East Jakarta, Indonesia, he saw the ruins of the Boy Camp Warehouse (Gudang Kempa). The campsite divided into two section, for boys and for girls, and each camp has own warehouse. But since the warehouse is no longer use, it seems that the ruins were likely to be razed to the ground, so that the location should become more orderly.

When approaching the ruins, at first glance Andi saw a number of scouting memorabilia scattered around it. He then contacted Fachry Makassau, Deputy Head National Training Centre Gerakan Pramuka, and was advised to try to find if there are any memorabilia that can be saved.
Andi contacted me, and we agreed to save the memorabilia that may still be saved. At least we can clean and store it, then later can be used as artifacts or memorabilia for the future Scouting Museum, when the museum was later established.

Among a number of memorabilia that we were saved, perhaps the interesting one is a large-sized WOSM flag. When finished taking some memorabilia that can be saved, we were going to go up from the location. Suddenly my eyes look at the purple cloth behind a broken box that has been neglected.

I tell Andi and Andi then retrieve it. Apparently it is a large-sized WOSM flag. So today, May 31, 2016, we saved the WOSM flag. When viewed from a number of other memorabilia we've saved in the same location, it is estimated that WOSM flag was from the early 1980s. It is a possibility that flag being hoisted on the main pitch Cibubur Scout Camp, during the National Jamboree and Asia-Pacific Jamboree 1981.
We also saved a large-sized WAGGS (now the name is WAGGGS with the three "G's) flag, which we believed together with the WOSM flag hoisted at the Cibubur Scout Camp too. Other memorabilia we saved were old Indonesia scout badges from 1980s, and some wood bow for archery which been used at the 1981 Asia-Pacific Jamboree activity.

A Short Story of the 2007 Purple Neckerchief

This is a short story of the purple neckerchief made in the year 2007. To welcoming the 100th anniversary of the World Scouting movement, I made two purple neckerchiefs with official logo of the 100th anniversary of the World Scouting movement and the additional words "Wartawan Pramuka" above the logo and "Scout Journalist" below the logo. “Wartawan Pramuka” is the Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) translation of “Scout Journalist”. I made also an additional inscription "Scouting Forever" placed outside the logo. All of the logo and words/inscription is made by machine embroidery.

I made it very limited, only two neckerchiefs. But, not until the Singapore Scout Fiesta Festival was held by the Singapore Scout Collectors Club in 2015, when I gave one of the neckerchief to somebody. In Singapore, I met with Trevor Johnson, a reputable Scouting memorabilia collector from the United Kingdom. I presented Trevor Johnson with one of the neckerchief. Besides as a gift to a fellow collector friend, I also gave him the neckerchief so he could take home to the United Kingdom.

As the neckerchief was created to celebrating the 100th anniversary of the World Scouting movement that was “born” by Lord Baden-Powell in the United Kingdom, so at least one of the neckerchief now return home to the United Kingdom.
